The sentence is actually longer: "El edificio es un elemento innovador cuyo objetivo es crear a sus pies un espacio de encuentro y confort ambiental."
The idea is that around this building everyone can find a place to meet up and experience environmental confort... I am finding difficulties for translating "cuyo objetivo es..." Which I would substitute with a simple "It is a building that aims to create to its feet(????) a space for everyone to meet up and experience environmental comfort."
My second question is this "a sus pies", should I translate it literally, or does it sound weird in English? What about "aims to create around itself..."? Thank you all in advance!! And have a Happy 2010!!

at its base with this context, I think "around it" could be replaced with a phrase such as "at its base" or "on the lower level".

Hello Lisa! Thank you, in the first place for your help! As I understand it from the text, this space should be right on the floor, not even in the first floor...al nivel del suelo... es decir, el edificio tiene pilares de un par de metros de altitud sobre los que se construyen las plantas, pero entre la primera planta y el suelo (alrededor de los pilares) queda un espacio libre para el "encuentro etc...". Cuyo objetivo... *with the aim of creating* - if you want to keep the original format of the sentence.

Espacio is a word I encounter more and more frequently and with a certain amount of dread. Here I think I prefer area to space.

Encuentro: I hesitated about using meeting at all. It's perhaps more a question of gathering, where things come together, not simply like a "meeting point" in an aiport.

But no real qualms about a sus pies - *around it*. *On its doorstep/at its door* might be a more literal translation though if you prefer.

Ah, the extra info you've put about the actual location of this space actually makes me want to rethink "around it", since it is really within it...

I didn't initially like "at its feet", but now incline towards the phrase itself, or "at its very feet", " at its base".

I think 'space' is fine here, but could you could also use 'area' in your text to vary it a bit.
