Italian term
le utilitarie
Italian to English
Tech/Engineering
Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Can someone help me come up with a good translation for this. The context "Fiat motorizza un'intera provincia con le sue utilitarie, la 500 e la 600".
Is "run-arounds" suitable?

I think officially it's this.

If you go to the wiki page for utilitaria and then click on English down on the left hand margin of the page you get the English equivalent. They seem to define the same type of car.

Ooops
Fiat puts a whole province on four wheels with its little Fiat 500 and Fiat 600 runabouts.

Of course runabouts was Jim Dandy's take. I'll leave all this stuff up for other contexts.

: Small, cheap cars - not superminis

Hmm, I once had a mini and I thought it was really super. I think the motor industry calls them super and "good value for money" but on the other side of the sales counter, they are just cheap.

: I have to agree, superminis in UK, subcompacts in US. PS I have a 998 mini and it is really super :-)

utility vehicles
as opposed to S.U.V. Basically, those types of cars where car for everyday use by the working class (blue-collar) consumer and for the masses.

compact cars
the term 'compact' is more commonly used than 'subcompact'
Based on a cursory check on google, the search of the term 'compact car' yelds 24+ millions results, versus 'subcompact car' with only 240K hits. You decide.
