Definition of *spouse*- (małżonek/małżonka)-
http://www.answers.com/topic/spouse
--A marriage partner; a husband or wife.
For the purposes of benefits etc, the law encopmasses unmarried couples on the same level as married couples, and will recognise them as "husband and wife", even though they may not be married-
Sic.
Quote:
.."There is no difference between couples who
• are married, or
• have formed civil partnerships, or
• live together as husband and wife, or
• live together as civil partners.
This is to make sure that couples who choose

to live together
That is how it is in the Gorecki translation of Kodeks rodzinny i opiekuńczy
... nie tylko wspólne pożycie małżonków ... - ... not only for the spouses to live together ...
... nie widzą możliwości dalszego wspólnego pożycia ... - they do not think they can live together any longer ...
