Discussion

Peter Nicholson (X) Mar 6, 2010:
Miriam300 How would you translate Jerry’s second example (nie widzą możliwości dalszego wspólnego pożycia) using your suggested answer (living together as husband and wife)?
Peter Nicholson (X) Mar 6, 2010:
This is something you have to do Under Polish law, both partners of a marriage have equal right and obligations. One of these obligations is to wspólne pożycie [Kodeks rodzinny i opiekuńczy, Article 23: http://isap.sejm.gov.pl/Download?id=WDU19640090059&type=3 ].
Peter Nicholson (X) Mar 6, 2010:
LTAHW The document to which Miriam300 refers [ http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/ch11-23254.pdf ] makes it clear that people who are living together as husband and wife (LTAHW) are not married (11000 and 11001). This distinction is made because ʻThe general principle in Social Security is that couples should be treated In a similar way. For example, a couple who are LTAHAW ... should be treated in the same way as if they were married ... ʼ (11002).

To add to Peter's comment:
Definition of *spouse*- (małżonek/małżonka)-
http://www.answers.com/topic/spouse
--A marriage partner; a husband or wife.

For the purposes of benefits etc, the law encopmasses unmarried couples on the same level as married couples, and will recognise them as "husband and wife", even though they may not be married-
Sic.

Quote:
.."There is no difference between couples who
• are married, or
• have formed civil partnerships, or
• live together as husband and wife, or
• live together as civil partners.
This is to make sure that couples who choose
to marry or form civil partnerships are not
treated any more or less favourably than those
who do not...." unquote.

to live together

That is how it is in the Gorecki translation of Kodeks rodzinny i opiekuńczy

... nie tylko wspólne pożycie małżonków ... - ... not only for the spouses to live together ...

... nie widzą możliwości dalszego wspólnego pożycia ... - they do not think they can live together any longer ...
