From ガタガタする, I think. In Toyota, we often had シフターガタ which meant the Shift Lever had looseness problems. Sometimes it is called "slop", but most often it is "looseness". "Rattling" would be for the sound.

: This is possible, too, although you'd think they'd use the kanji then. == The context would be key. If it's in a list of defects, I'd be certain that it's talking about looseness, but can't say for sure with just the info provided.

Well, to be honest with you, Tina-san, I'm not quite sure, except that there were no hits for rifter gutter and lifter gutter. That's why I posted my suggestions as a reference. Anyway, thanks for the agree.
