James you're right.
I've thought about it and I have finally decided that IN SCHOOLS is the correct translation. I mean, I think it's the most correct translation. We're talking about vollyball played at school, so "school level" as I have thought before or "in schools" can express the concept very well.
Yes, "at an amateur level" doesn't mean volleyball played at school, as you said before. Thank you so much!

James (Jim) Davis Apr 6, 2010:
Logic "scolastica" does not mean amateur. Of course all sport in schools is necessarily not professional by law, but a huge proportion of amateur sport is not played in schools. Why take unnecessary liberties with the text, when a perfectly good, simple and accurate translation is readily available: (in schools, at school level)?
Have a look here at lo sport scolastico:

I think..
"at an amateur level" could be the right translation.
What do you think?
traduzionigs (asker) Apr 6, 2010:
It's one of the most played sports:
-nationwide
-worldwide
-"a livello scolastico"
This is the context. :)
David Hollywood Apr 6, 2010:
need more context to clarify this 1 :)

agree James (Jim) Davis : If it doesn't mean this, then maybe it isn't Italian (a livello di Italiano, ovviamente).

agree SYLVY75 : given the context, I agree with this translation.

agree Simona Fresia : "A livello scolastico" come grado di preparazione si usa per le lingue, non per gli sport, quindi tradurrei così anch'io

at an amateur level

livello scolastico obviously just means scholastic level, but the point here is that the level is amateur and not professional.

And that's the thing too; you don't know at which school level e.g. high-school, middle school and certainly not university- b/c they do not have university sports. Amateur is the best way, given the context we have, to translate this.
Peer comment(s):

neutral James (Jim) Davis : What "point" where? Logically, I don't go to school therefore I am a professional player? And "in schools" or "at school level" won't work just as well, apart from being more accurate?

that's a good point Jim. I just think, given the lack of context, amateur will work no matter what.
