A fuel which is able to command a higher price in the market place than a competitive fuel capable of performing the same task. In this sense a fuel may warrant the description 'premium' because of its relative cleanliness, convenient handling, or ease of storage. However, the term 'premium' as commonly used does not necessarily tie in with this strict economic definition. The phrases 'premium markets' and 'premium uses' are often loosely used in conjunction with premium fuel when describing a convenient fuel (irrespective of price), a particular application for which there is no readily available replacement (eg motor spirit), and specific uses where efficiency of conversion is maximized by burning one fuel in preference to another (again irrespective of price). For instance, natural gas is often described as a premium fuel; it is convenient and clean and capable of being used highly efficiently, but it is often the case that buyers do not have to pay a higher unit price for gas as compared with competitive fuels." - GDT
