Spanish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals stability study
Good evening everyone. My turn to ask for help!
This is a summary of a stability study on a tablet to decide whether the shelf life can be extended or not.
Stability plot heading: Humedad
There follows a plot with 'moisture' on the x axis and ''time points' on the y axis (in English already).
Underneath the graph:
Se ha tenido que *** forzar la transformación lineal ***. El intervalo de confianza de la medida indica que soportaría 121 meses.

I'm not sure what this means, and I can't find "force linear transformation" anywhere.
This is a report from Spain for a UK target.

No problems for me Emma, I'm not bothered about the points, just seems a dodgy translation but I'm sure your client knows what she/he's talking about, usually scientists have quite a good level of English for conferences etc, and she'he is probably familiar with the English equivalent.... my answer was an educated guess that seem to fit as the data had not reached the 121 months.... all the best.

In view of the variety of answers... ... and no one giving any agrees, I consulted the client who said that linear transformation is not the same as linear regression and that it could be translated literally without using 'best-fit' and suchlike.

This is really a statistics question. Linear transformation is a commonly used term in statistics and thus I think it must mean this. Medium confidence however.

calculate a best-fit linear transformation

I don't know the statistical concepts and techniques involved here, so this is based on searching for different combinations of these words. In a statistical context, I think "forzar" has to be translated as "fit" or "force" ... so voilà my best shot at this.

"best fit linear transformation" appears twice in the reference I've cited.

Good luck with this one!

extrapolate a line of best fit

I'm believe the 'transformacion lineal' is to extrapolate the data to a time further than has been performed. Has the time data on the y-axis passed 121 months? If not then I would be very confident of my answer.

A can't imagine a better literal translation which means the same thing. Doesn't your client want an accurate and natural translation?

Thanks Neil, you are right that the 121 months has not passed. The data has been plotted to 121 months, but only 70 have actually passed. So your answer is probably right but my client wants a more literal translation :(
