Discussion

Kate Major Patience Jan 26, 2011:
Phoebe's point is a good one on reflection. Peter Jackson's answer will probably do nicely in any case.
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Jan 26, 2011:
@ Phil I'm usually too busy to provide a running account of each step I've taken, each link I've looked at in my research. If people think that way, then so be it and they can choose not to help me.
Phoebe Anne Jan 26, 2011:
Lisa. Mi sugerencia es que no utilices la palabra racion, pues no queda muy elegante; tampoco que es "para una persona". En todo caso es el comensal el que preguntara si la cantidad de comida que hay en el plato es muy grande como para poderla compartir con otra/s personas.
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 26, 2011:
Single fish vs portion As Isamar points out, bred to be specially "portion-sized" therefore!
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 26, 2011:
Another thing to bear in mind Is that the punter may even be charged by weight - common practice in restaurants specializing in seafood!
philgoddard Jan 26, 2011:
No, I'm not taking the mickey. If you just post a phrase and don't share your thoughts and ideas with us, it looks like you're asking us to do your research for you. I'm sure that's not the case here, but people could see it that way.
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Jan 26, 2011:
@Phil Are you taking the mickey?? I know what a dorada is and if I didn´t I would have looked it up.
Isamar Jan 26, 2011:
Thanks Kate! It's a concept that's so well understood here in Spain and not easy to translate without having to say it's fish-farmed!
Kate Major Patience Jan 26, 2011:
Isamar - totally agree, great explanation!
Isamar Jan 26, 2011:
De ración refers to the small fish-farm fish which are the right size for one person. At markets you'll find all sorts of whole fish sold like this from sole to sea- or gilt-head bream. It has nothing to do with the size of the meal itself.
Kate Major Patience Jan 26, 2011:
That's what I was thinking, Peter. I've come across "ración" meaning "whole" in supermarket magazines I translate, the meaning confirmed by the photos... @Phil: I'm sure it's the "de ración" which Lisa is asking about, as other colleagues have assumed too. I would be very surprised if "dorada" is the issue here!
peter jackson Jan 26, 2011:
So it would be something like baked or roasted gilthead bream.
peter jackson Jan 26, 2011:
De ración usually means just a whole fish.
Natalia Pedrosa (X) Jan 26, 2011:
Ración de Dorada Creo que es una mala traducción, dorada de ración no tiene ningún sentido.
philgoddard Jan 26, 2011:
Could you tell us what research you've done? For example, have you looked up dorada?

roasted gilthead or sea bream

Thought I might post it as an answer, too!
Peer comment(s):

agree Kate Major Patience : Yep - I was about to suggest you did. Sea bream is most often cooked whole here, and this translation works perfectly well. :)

neutral Isamar : I agree with roasted as an alternative to baked, but sea bream is "besusgo" and "de ración" should probably be translated.
7 mins
agree Phoebe Anne : roasted is the right translation.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, Peter! I agree that translating 'ración' is not necessary on an English menu - it would look odd. Usually if the fish is served by weight, then this is stated on the menu. Decided to go for 'baaked' though instead of 'roasted' - both are correct, it's just a matter of preference :)"

Sea bream (portion)

I'm thinking ración means a portion (not the whole fish). Perhaps like in this menu?

Baked gilt-head bream (for one)

As "de racion" refers to the small size of the fish and to put "small" or something similar seems strange in English, my suggestion is to put "for one" in brackets and if the diner asks what it means the waiter can say it's a smallish fish, perfect for one person....

Thanks Rick!
disagree Phoebe Anne : there's no need to use "for one". You never find those words in a menu list..at least not in a fancy restaurant.

Thanks Phoebe! I agree that it doesn't sound great in English, but if it has to be translated how else would you put it? Just leave it and see if the customer asks anything?
