English term

underwriting

English Bus/Financial Management
Can complete simple desktop reviews for underwriting.

Has conferred with underwriting on policy language and made recommendations.

Both sentences are from job descriptions. The first one from Loss Evaluation and the second one from Transportation Loss Control. Does "underwriting" mean "underwriter" here? Could Underwriting in the first sentence mean "insurance industry"?

refers to an underwriting department

It sounds like both sentences refer to an underwriting department when the word "underwriting" is used. It could be insurance industry. The sentences, if you wanted to fill in the language which is assumed in the term "underwriting", look like this:

Can complete simple desktop reviews for the underwriting department.

Has conferred with the underwriting department on policy language and made recommendations.
Example sentence:

Can complete simple desktop reviews for underwriting (i.e. the underwriting department).

basically means the people who see if everything is ok and give the go ahead to proceed

"underwriting" here is probably a department that you have to send everything to for approval

might simply mean "signing"/"authorizing" by the person authorized to do so
Note from asker:
It is the job descriptions for an insurance company, so I don't think Underwriting means a department here.

identifying and classifying insurance risk

Underwriting
The process of identifying and classifying the potential degree of risk represented by a proposed insured.

Mark, both terms relate to insurance. Underwriting is what the underwriter does. And the underwriter works in the insurance industry.

OK. I´m sure what it means is "conferred with the underwriting department". I have just finished a translation of an internal manual for a Brazilian insurance company, and they talk like that. "Underwriting will be consulted on this". "If necessary, talk to credit". "Technical will do a report on that". "Commercial should be informed". They all refer to departments within the company, as I see that DCtranslator has so ably explained below.
Note from asker:
I know its meaning in the dictionary. But it says "conferred with underwriting" here. It can't be a process in this context. Could it be a department, as interpreted by David?
I think DCtranslator is right too. Thanks David.

Underwriting

Definitions

1. The procedure by which an underwriter brings a new security issue to the investing public in an offering. In such a case, the underwriter will guarantee a certain price for a certain number of securities to the party that is issuing the security (in exchange for a fee). Thus, the issuer is secure that they will raise a certain minimum from the issue, while the underwriter bears the risk of the issue.

2. The process of insuring someone or something.

3. The process by which a lender decides whether a potential creditor is creditworthy and should receive a loan.

-----
In this particular context, the first mention ("complete reviews for underwriting") refers to the process, and the second mention ("conferred with underwriting") refers to persons / a department, i.e. those who complete the underwriting process.
