English term

research studies

English Bus/Financial Management
Is able to read and interpret basic research studies.

Is experienced with designing and conducting research studies in own area of expertise.

Both sentences are from job description of Medical Research. It seems that this phrase has different meanings in the above two sentences. The one in the first sentence seems to refer to "a written work", while the one in the sentence refers to "an experiment".

Mark,
You asked Constantinos how a study can be read. Here is an example for you:

The same in both instances

In the first, the candidate has to demonstrate competence in understanding/interpreting existing research studies, in the second, s/he has to demonstrate the ability to design and carry out new research studies.

Incidentally, "Is experienced with designing and conducting" is grammatically wrong. It should be "experienced in" or "has experience of".

Re your point about written work. A research study is both the practical work involving whatever survey or experiment is carried out and the writing up of that practical work and its results and interpretation. This applies to both instances.

neutral philgoddard : I don't think it is quite the same. In the first instance, it's really about carrying out the work yourself; in the second, it's about understanding the written results of others' work// Yes, other way round - but my point still stands.

The confusion about written work seems to stem from not realising that the initial written plan and writing up the research is as essential a part of a research study as doing the survey or experiment.// I had actually covered that point in my answer.

research studies

What is a research study?

A research study is a way for finding answers to difficult scientific or health questions. For example, scientists may want to understand more about how AIDS is spread by asking people about their activities in a survey. Another example is when doctors might do a research study to find out whether a new medicine helps people improve their eyesight.

In this pamphlet, you will find important questions you should ask of anyone who wants you or members of your family or community to be part of a research study.

I don´t see the word ¨read¨...
Note from asker:
I know what a research study is. What confuses me is that: why can it be "read" ?
