English term

Italian bread

English to Spanish Other Cooking / Culinary bread products
Hello!
Does any one know what is the Spanish common term for the US for the American "Italian bread". The image I have on the original file looks like this one: http://www.faqs.org/photo-dict/phrase/4160/Italian-bread.htm...
The text is just a list of breads with images, no more context than that.

I'm not sure if I could use just "pan italiano"...

Any opinions would be welcomed!
Thanks!

Discussion

María Emilia Meini (asker) Feb 8, 2011:
Thank you for all the opinions! Yes, it's not a ciabatta or focaccia. It's what Americans call "Italian bread" but maybe it isn't even a genuine Italian variety. I think that taking into account the audience is US Spanish and I cannot use a very local term, I will have to choose "pan italiano" after all!
Cecilia Gowar Feb 8, 2011:
May be, but in the rest of the Spanish speaking world that is not the case. There are several types of "pan italiano", ciabatta being one of the most popular, but different from the American "Italian bread", which resembles more a "pain brioché".
I have researched "pan americano" without much success... You might have to use "Pan Italiano" (in quotes) and add an explanation.
Lydia De Jorge Feb 8, 2011:
In the US I have always heard it called Pan Italiano.

14 hrs
Hi Paula,it's not a ciabatta or focaccia, just plain pan italiano, if you put this in parenthesis, you can't go wrong, no matter how you "slice it"!!

Peer comment(s):

chapata

And, for the record, this is what we call it commonly in Spain! Es que somos de pueblo?!

Thanks Sandra
disagree Alex Lago : chapata bread isn't like the image posted by the asker. Your photo doesn't look like the askers photo, look closely the thing with bread is it might look similar but that doesn't mean they are the same. + your example doesn't look like chapata either

http://casadiellesdelaguela.com/imagenes/galeria/carta_panes... Our local bakeries all produce this type of chapata, altho it is true that the supermarkets do the squarer version. But the tahonas make better bread!!
7 hrs
That is one of the available formats, but it is also commonly produced in the format shown by the asker here in Spain.

disagree Alex Lago : Ciabatta is an Italian bread but it is definitely not the type pf bread in the picture posted by the asker
2 hrs
Then how come that in spain, they make it just in the same way? besides, the shape does not matter in any of these cases.
disagree Rosario Sanz : i agree with these other answers, looking at the picture that is not a ciabatta bread for sure, ciabatta is more rustic and thick...
11 hrs
like I said, shape and form does not matter at all; what really matters it the recipe.
disagree hugocar : In bread, as in women, shape and form matter a lot.
18 hrs
agree Noni Gilbert Riley : One of the options for Spain, although I can't speak for other countries.

Thanks for your agree. :))))

"Italian bread"

http://www.thefreshloaf.com/recipes/italianbread
What is commonly known as Italian Bread in the states is something like French Bread but typically softer. The dough typically contains some olive oil and dairy to soften things up, and instead of steaming the oven to maximize crust you brush the crust with water before placing it in the oven which keeps it softer and chewier. It is the perfect spongy bread for mopping up pasta sauces, and quite good on its own.
