Bookends are used to prop books up, to support them.
The first experience is important because it determines whether the customer will pursue the relationship or not.
The last experience is important because it is what the customer will remember. Hence two "piliers" for the overall customer experience.

I love the visual metaphor Bliss uses, as it resonates with my feeling that brands are stories, with real introductions, conclusions, themes, chapters and mini-vignettes in between the covers.
