from tunnels to thin, flat shotsのshotsの部分はslotのtypoではないでしょうか。ヒントは次に来る文章、The formation of slots...と原文の問題個所であるtunnelからです。トンネルはhttp://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/トンネルに説明されているように、断面の高さあるいは幅に比べて軸方向に細長い地下空間のことを言います。その反面、slotは細長い隙間や溝のことを指します。つまり、引っ張り応力(tensile stress)を用いることによって、トンネル状の大きな出入り口（穴）から薄くて平らで細長い隙間や溝にまで及び、腐食による損傷の形態や構造に変化をもたらす、と書かれています。

I also thought about the typo at first because I saw "slot" three times right after the "shot" sentence. However, as Yumico san's opinion, I am not so sure if the writer could make this simple mistake. So far, I have found another possible typo, which was "mode I" instead of "model".
