Крутиться, вертеться, с голоду не помереть...

Non-PRO Russian to English Art/Literary
- Пусть земля ему будет пухам, а нам тут еще надо крутиться, вертеться, с голоду не помереть...

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 14, 2003:
Jack, I'm pretty sure it's not based on Alice in Wonderland in any way... It's still set in the 18-th century... The author might have been inspired by LC, of course...

run hard to stay in the same place

We atill have to run hard to stay in the same place, so as not to die of hunger.

I think this saying is based on something in "Alice in Wonderland" ("Алиса в стране чудес")

(When I was learning Russian, we were taught a song called "Крутится, вертится шар голубой")
Peer comment(s):

agree Yuri Geifman : It's the Red Queen Principle, Through the Looking Glass (that song is from some famous old movie, I only remember the silly parodies we used to sing as kids)

Yes, you're right. "Alice Through the Looking Glass".
agree Natalia Koltsova : Интересно, а "пусть земля ему будет пухом" как сказать?
