neutral writeaway : not sure it fits in with the actual context. At bit OTT stylistically imo

Thanks for the additional context. Of my 3 suggestions, I now favour my first one.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone. You were all very helpful. This was simply the choice that I think worked best in the context for a client who likes to keep things fairly close to the source."

you need a serious rewrite job here...

At the time of his demise, XX had just launched out into/embarked upon what had all the signs of becoming a highly rewarding/promising international career.

In other words I think you should forget about the career that was waiting to embrace him with open arms. Unless you go for that sort of image (hope not)!

3 for confidence because style is never a matter of right or wrong
Note from asker:
Thanks Polyglot. Yes I take your point :)
Peer comment(s):

agree Andreas THEODOROU : translator's dilemma - IMO if you're only getting paid to translate then do just that

agree Colin Rowe : With "had just embarked upon". Second half also good.

full (con)text.

here it's not an obituary. There are going to pay a tribute to this artiste. Imo it's important to see this to get a grasp of the style.
