Discussion

Ingo Dierkschnieder May 26, 2011:
Elvira Schmid (asker) May 26, 2011:
Ingo Dierkschnieder May 26, 2011:
Kim Metzger May 26, 2011:
Has "poem by Theodor Fontane" already been translated?

Yes, that I'd wish I could live to see

Just in case it has not been done yet. Apologies, if it has!

Of course the context would determine the most appropriate tense etc.
Peer comment(s):

agree Birgit Wilpers : what's the problem even if has been done yet? Right answer!

Thank you.
neutral Kim Metzger : I wish, not I'd wish

Thank you, as always, for the suggestion!
disagree Lancashireman : Sorry, Horst. I was intending to let this pass, but then I saw it had attracted an ‘agree’. “Yes, that I would have wished I could have lived to see”; “Yes, that I had wished I had lived to have seen” etc? Unfortunately, none of them English.

Thank you. It seems I heard this from an older acquiantance; she had a reputation for speaking properly. Quite possibly not too many people around speak English.
agree Andrew Bramhall : The english is fine!

yes, that I still want to see!

Might depend on the poem:
(a suggestion/attempt below)

It's all the same, don't really care which
some get to be poor, some get to be rich
but now under Bismarck - what else will there be?
all that under Bismarck, yes, that I still want to see.

variation:

what be under Bismarck, yes, that I still want to see.
Peer comment(s):

agree Allison Wright (X) : Or, if the poet is being ironic, "yes, that I would like to see!" or "yes, that I'd like to see!"

thank you, Allison!
