I am proofreading a text where this was translated as "prophylactic vacation", which I think sounds super literal and awkward. Is there a similar term in English?
Thanks in advance!

: Of course it's not 'prophylactic"! You could also say "rest period".

preventive vacations
Hello, I was quite taken aback by the term and decided to look for any other translation for the term "profiláctico", and this is what I found in wordreference:
profiláctico,-a
I adj Med prophylactic
medidas profilácticas, preventive/precautionary health measures
II sustantivo masculino condom, US prophylactic
According to this, you could translate the term as "preventive vacations / holidays" depending on the country.
Hope to have helped you.

rest and relaxation (R&R)

This may be only an American term. R&R is commonly understood to mean 'rest and relaxation', though strictly speaking it originated as 'rest and rehabilitation' in the military, and applies to vacations after stressful tours of duty - not rehabilitation from an illness, though.
www.wisegeek.com/what-is-r-and-r.htm
R and R is a term first used by the military to stand for rest and rehabilitation. Most people mistranslate it as rest and relaxation, or rest and recreation. It is in such common usage, that one can really use R and R to mean any of the above. However, a soldier would use it in a formal sense to translate to rest and rehabilitation.
