Japanese term

固有 (の書体)

Japanese to English Marketing Printing & Publishing
This is taken from some visual identity guidelines. I am unsure about the translation of 固有 in the context of typefaces. See below for full context:

〈文字表記の表示方法〉
ペットネームなど固有の書体がある場合は、
それに従ってください。

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion

Tomoyuki Kono Jun 30, 2011:
Font selection is an important part of corporate and product identity. That's particularly true of communications materials such as letterheads. (I'm assuming that ペットネーム refers to some kind of product name here. See http://www.weblio.jp/content/ペットネーム.) As such, 書体 must refer to something more concrete than broad categories of style such as 楷書/行書 or 明朝/Gothic. That's my tuppence anyway.

私の回答にも書きましたが、通常、「書体」というのはFontやどういった書き方の種類かを意味するので、ひらがな、カタカナ等は「書体」とは表現しませんよね。そういった種別は「使用文字」等、別の表現をするのが普通かと思いますが…後はまさに「表記文字」とか…。 In any ways, "固有" should mean something specifically used (only for something); unique and decided already which you cannot change. Does it make sense...?

書体というのが文字の種類(ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字、アルファベット)なのかfontなのか?

It's an electronics manufacturer, and the visual identity guidelines I am translating are specifically for branding their various communications materials.

Just an idea...

It actually doesn't make sence even in Japanese sentence...just by seeing this part. However, if it is about "how you write the name of pet", I think the best would be "specific" form...

Just as reference, "書体" doesn't mean "type of character in Japanese", like hiragana, katakana... It's more "明朝", "Block", "行書", " 楷書"...

It's just a suggestion. Hope it helps. :)
