Spanish to English Medical Sports / Fitness / Recreation Football Injury
This is about a muscle injury sustained by a (Real Madrid) footballer. Does anyone know the specific term for when footballers cannot play because of injuries? As you can see from the context, the footballer can participate in group training sessions gradually, so I'm sure this is only referring to the time that he cannot actually play games.

I haven't a clue about football, and haven't been able to find anything convincing.

Ha! Good point Liz I meant hit-and-miss in the sense that they can often be poor quality, even handwritten scanned/faxed copies, which are next to impossible to make out (and believe me, I’ve been sent some of them in my time! - [illegible] springs to mind!).

At any rate, it was merely intended as a side joke, the main point was about the translation I delivered.

Thanks a bunch everyone I also forgot to mention this had a tight deadline, and I had to deliver it at 6 this morning. I went with Jamie’s suggestion and delivered Estimated injury downtime: 7-10 weeks for Tiempo aproximado de baja de 7-10 semanas. I can see from the comments that this may not have been the best option for the UK, however, job delivered now…

I was initially going with Simon’s “time out through injury”, and was keen on a couple of others too. And now I’m loving Jenni’s “time off play”! Never mind, I think the message delivered conveyed the meaning very clearly. And it was a medical report after all, which are hit-and-miss at the best of times!

out of action/sidelined/will miss

This may be U.S. English but they're pretty common for sports reports in the press or TV.
Joe Footballer suffered a pulled hamstring muscle and will be out of action for 6-8 weeks.
Joe Footballer was injured in practice today and could be sidelined until early December/for 3 or four games. (Sideline probably comes from U.S. football originally but is pretty much used across the board. Means you're not on the active playing field/court).
You can also simply use will miss, but best when there'a more specific number. Will miss 3-4 weeks, will miss the team's upcoming clasico against Barcelona, all sorts of options.
They're all pretty interchangeable so you can vary your wording over the course of a text.

This is also often used to refer to the fact that the player is unavailable for selection for x period of time. He may able to train but is not match fit - which is what is important to the manager, fans, club, etc.

time off play/ medical leave (of absence)*

*I'd say "time off play" if it's the period that he shouldn't be on the field or in training and "medical leave" if the document has insurance ramifications. It's picky, but I wouldn't use "sick leave" as it regards an injury, not an illness.

Thanks so much, Jenni. Had this been a few hours earlier, I would most probably have chosen it. It's like reverse hindsight! I originally meant to say "I haven't a clue about football *terminology" when I posted this yesterday, but going I the hits "time off play" produces for footie injuries in the UK, it's a very convincing term to me. Perhaps I could correct this "reverse hindsight" effect in the glossary?
