German term

Bauleistung

German to English Bus/Financial Accounting IFRS statement of comprehensive income
Looking for advice from the accounting experts ...

The term "Bauleistung" is the first entry in an IFRS statement of comprehensive income for a construction company and is the only revenue item mentioned. In past years, this was translated as "construction output" but I am wondering whether it should actually be "construction revenue" or something along those lines. "Revenue from construction contracts" appears as a possibility in the English-only 2011 IFRS taxonomy. The German term doesn't appear in the 2009 version.

What would you recommend in this case?

Thanks, Robin! That makes more sense.

Hi Niamh, I think I'd go for "revenue from construction services", rather than anything to do with "construction contracts" (which would specifically refer to IAS 11 construction contracts in IFRS-speak, i.e. "Fertigungsaufträge"). The XBRL taxonomy label refers to IAS 11 construction contract revenue, not to all revenue generated from the sale of construction services.

Construction revenue
.. sounds pretty familiar (right) to me. Or as you said 'Revenue from construction contracts'. The German -leistung, is like the German -mäßig and -technisch = to be mostly disregarded as a 'word' in translation; instead translate the 'sense' it conveys.

Under IFRS, during the construction of infrastructure, the operator recognises construction revenue in its profit or loss statement and a corresponding intangible asset — being the right to collect toll from users.

Under GAAP, construction contract revenues use either the percentage-completed or the completed-contract methods. Under IFRS, you cannot use the completed contract method, which means that companies recognize construction revenue using the percentage-completion method or use the recoverable costs.

EBITDA margin is arrived at by considering the EBITDA calculated according to IFRS, which determines that Construction Revenue is part of Net Revenue, while Construction Cost and Provision for Maintenance are included in the Cost of Services Provided.
