In the US there are MD\'s (medical doctors) and DO (Doctors of Osteopathy). Both are medical doctors, surgeons, etc. As a matter of fact, at Michigan State University they have both types of medical schools, and they study together their first three years before they split up (for philosophical reasons).
90% of the physicians in the US are MD\'s, and they have 89% of the patients. The other 10% of physicians are DO\'s and they have the remaining 11% of the patients.
The main difference is DO\'s, in addition to surgical intervention, medication, etc., also incororate manipulation, nutrition (MD\'s do not have one course in nutrition), etc.
