Barbara Thomas Nov 22, 2011:
Target audience? The choice of term also depends on the size of the operation and target audience. For instance, if you're translating a web page designed to attract tourists to a little cider mill, you might want to go with cider farm/mill. However, if you're describing an industrial operation, I would go with cider brewery, cider making plant or cider brewing plant.
Noni Gilbert Riley Nov 22, 2011:
In another entry of yours I see a reference in conjunction to planta and bodega. This information is IMPORTANT for this question, and should be included here. We shouldn't have to search elsewhere! ;-)
Noni Gilbert Riley Nov 22, 2011:
Lagar This is the normal name for the place where cider is pressed and produced. So I'm a little surprised to see bodega, and wonder whether you could give us some more context? On the other hand, this summer I visited friends in France who have done up an old rectory and there is a HUGE cellar with capacity to store vast quantities of bottles, and the remains of the cider press which, unfortunately imho, they have decided to remove. I was about to describe it as a wine cellar, but of course there's no reason why those shelves shouldn't have been intended for cider bottles. This was in the Saintes region.

No, it's ok. I am referring to the whole cider- making process. So the correct word for bodega is cider farm, not winery, right'
Helena Chavarria Nov 21, 2011:
The whole wine-making process is carried out in a Spanish "bodega" (winery): from harvesting the grapes until the wine is bottled. Surely the same thing happens on a cider farm? Or are you referring to a shop that only sells cider?

The second link seems to be broken so I've posted some information for you:
List Of Cider Farms by name
We list British cider farms arranged by name, by county - and now by reputation (as voted by the readers of Old Scrump's Cider House).

Note: although this list is still under construction, it now contains over 170 Cider Farms which is a good start in anyone's book!

If you Google "Cider Farm" you'll see that the term doesn't seem to have anything to do with large-scale industry.
Note from asker:
thank you Nodi4. I have one question: isn't cider farm a synonym os cider production plant?
Peer comment(s):

agree Joel Schaefer : Of course! "Winery" refers to grape wine almost exclusively.

Spanish term (edited): bodega (sidra)

cider mill (US) / cider maker (UK) / cider brewery (UK)

There are a number of terms in use, but if you look at Yellow Pages and industrial category entries, you will find that "cider mill" (1,620,000 hits), "cider maker" (148,000 hits) and "cider brewery" (14,000 hits) are common categories. Cider mill seems to be more common in the US and cider maker in the UK
