Maybe it can mean a particular type of bullet; I haven't found it with that meaning. But "vainilla" is the standard term for what is called the case of a cartridge or round.

"Los cartuchos, fueron incorporados a la actualidad conteniendo un cilindro metálico (vaina), la cual poseía la carga en su interior, el cebo en el centro del culote (base de la vainilla) y un extremo de la bala incrustado en la boca del cañón."

Thanks Charles, that's really helpful. I was guessing at bullet and had even thought of slug (looks a bit like a vanilla pod).
