Hello,
I am translating text on sociological phenomenon and the culture of youth. The text contains some very specific cultural references, which I am not sure I am conveying correctly in the target language which is Arabic.
Here is my text:
"... The freak dropping mescaline before tripping out on acid rock has nothing to do with the skinhead boozing up before getting into a punch-up on the terraces while watching Spurs play at home."
Also, I am assuming "Spurs" was some sort of a TV show perhaps. Your help on this is much appreciated.

zoning out to psychedelic music
"Tripping out" refers to the effect of the drug. The person taking it is losing themselves in the music, zoning out etc.
"Acid rock" is a type of music from the 60’s that became associated with taking psychedelic drugs (like mescaline, LSD).

I'm sure someone out there will be able to explain it better than me if that doesn't make sense!

You're very welcome, Noha! Good luck with the rest of the text!

No, Kevin, are you kidding. Your explanation is in every sense enlightening. Never in a million years could I have figured out that "tripping out" thing, hehehe. Thanks a bunch, my friend. |

: The context really needs a mature native British, preferably English speaker - more difficult for all others

Thanks Sheila! I'd like to think that a non-mature Irish native managed to explain it sufficiently...

: And agree with Sheila's comment; though a native speaker of Arabic who spent some of the '60s in a British art college would be ideal.

: Acid rock is inspired by tripping and listened to while tripping. Tripping is hallucinating under the influence of acid (LSD) or mescaline, as you say. The music produces sensual (esp. visual) perceptions synaesthetically. A freak is a druggy hippy.

so, the skinheads are people who are actually skinheads, I take it huh? And the terraces here are at the stadium, as well?
