Spanish term

compensaciones

Spanish to English Social Sciences Environment & Ecology
This is in a text about carbon trading. I am not sure whether 'compensaciones' means 'offsetting' or whether it just means that the industrialized countries have been cleared (of their carbon debts). suggestions appreciated.

Discussion

Jane Martin (asker) Mar 25, 2012:
rest of the paragraph Sorry for the delay - have been down at the allotment having a break! However, from all comments it seems fairly certain that it is offsetting. Thanks for helping.

the rest of the paragraph sheds light... Jane, could you post it please? I don't want to pre-empt you by posting what I found online, and it might not be the same as your text. It seems to indicate that the only really effective way to combat climate change, is to reduce emissions, rather than offsetting them.

Since the ST mentions "países industrializados" (and not individuals or companies), I'm sure "offsetting" is the correct term. // Cheers Simon.

disagree philgoddard : Your first reference is about compensation for environmental damage, and I don't see the relevance of your second one.
