I think there is a use of irony here. Obviously he didn't feel better after being beaten.

In English we could say something like "...they beat him so badly he knew what was good for him"

I think what the sentence means is that after the beating he would not repeat whatever it was that caused the beating in the first place. In other words, he learned his lesson.
