: This is clearly a good option. And, yes, "intrinsic animal nature" is too long and unnecessary to be repeated over and over again. (would sound awkward). One time may be fine, though.

You may have to rework it a little depending on the other context (e.g., species-appropriate diet, etc.), but this term and the adjective form as well generate a lot of hits. The French term animalité is used a lot in a philosophical sense as well, but I think, as you do, that in this case we are talking about proper nutrition, care, etc. suited to the needs of the specific species of animal.

You go also say "animal nature" as suggested by Agnes Grand Fay.
I would avoid, though, "animality" (sounds awkward in English in this particular context).
