Some examples of the difference in cost between lump sum awards and PPOs are shown in Table 2. For simplicity it has been assumed that the Claimant is aged 22 at the time of the accident, the PPO settlement is agreed in the same year and that inflation will be 4 % per annum. (Even though in reality the PPO settlement is only achieved several years after the accident year, the effect is still the same as described herein.) The term “life expectancy” means the age at which the Claimant is expected to die. For each of our examples we have evaluated the undiscounted ground up claim on a probabilistic basis, the method which we believe is the more statistically reliable approach. However, for comparison purposes we also show the equivalent numbers on a deterministic basis.
