Yes, this one very common. BWT, the following is a sub-entry from the LDOCE5:
4 sudden movement [ singular ] a sudden movement of your body, usually caused by fear or surprise
with a start
Ted woke up with a start and felt for the light switch.
She said his name, and Tom gave a start (= made a sudden movement ) .

There is a lot of good food for thought here, but I think that Omid is onto a particularly good thing with 'I woke up with a start.'.

I just wanted to point out that there are several variants, as you can see from my title.
