French term

encadrement

French to English Bus/Financial Advertising / Public Relations Competition
 Prix

This is describing a competition for business managers. They have to present innovative projects showing how the products of the company running the competition have helped them.

Not sure what "encadrement" refers to here - the people receiving the award, or the award itself (a framed certificate?).

Discussion

Wolf Draeger Jul 4, 2012:
Ockham's Razor :-) Hi Yolanda, that's an interesting thought; but seeing as this is an internal proposal, it could just be that the PR firm is specifying to its client its suggestion for the jury ("the jury will short-list the main candidates"- "who's on the jury?"- "management").
Yolanda Broad Jul 4, 2012:
Instructions? Some documents I translate include instructions to the WebPage editor. So maybe this is telling the editor to make sure to put a border around that section of text?
Wendy Streitparth Jul 2, 2012:
Maybe totally wrong, but I understood it to mean a competition for business managers using the products of this company XXX, with a jury of judges composed of managers from XXX.
Gurudutt Kamath Jul 2, 2012:
None of these makes sense None of these seems to be right. As cc in nyc says, probably it is management. However, if it is for business managers -- it does not make sense. You need to figure it out yourself or provide more context.
Mark Nathan (asker) Jul 1, 2012:
Type of document This is an internal document from a PR company presenting the idea for the competition to the main company.
Wendy Streitparth Jul 1, 2012:
@ Wolf: that is how I understood it.
Wolf Draeger Jul 1, 2012:
Maybe the encadrement refers to the jury - the management of the company arranging the competition? But then what is the Prix de Sélection?
B D Finch Jul 1, 2012:
What sort of document? If it is a magazine article or similar, could this refer the reader to an inserted textbox with further information?
Robert Brown (X) Jul 1, 2012:
Have the people taking part in the competition been mentored/ supervised? I wonder if this could be a reference to a mentoring project, as in the 5th sense of encadrer given in http://www.larousse.com/en/dictionaries/french/encadrer. If so perhaps "mentoring" would work in this context.

Could it just be?
Ils reçoivent le Prix de la Sélection du jury (encadrement).

They are presented with the ... (in a frame)
In other words: in a document form to show that they have been nominated for the prize.

Thanks Daniel, I am aware that this is a possible meaning of encadrement. My question is how does that meaning fit into this context?

Note from asker:
OK, so you are saying that the jury is made up of managerial figures. That makes sense.

management

I think it refers to the type of "Prix de la Sélection du jury," but with so little to go on, it's hard to be sure. Perhaps "management" is as vague here as "encadrement," but I would not expand the translation... without additional information.

I just noticed Wolf's comment on Wendy's answer. :o :o :o

Obviously I agree with Wolf re: "management," but I think it qualifies the nature of the prize rather than the nature of the jury.

coaching/mentoring/supervision

Note from asker:
Thanks Mimi, that is an interesting idea. They talk about "parrainage" elswhere. I think I am going to translate it as "management" and flag it as ambiguous.
