Discussion

Mohammad Ali Moinfar (X) Jul 24, 2012:
Dear Mr. Mostafaei: Thanks for your comments.
1) An apology for "Dear Mostafa", I mixed up your given name and surname.
2) As to "doesn't necessarily mean that we are wrong", in my humble opinion, neutrality and disagreement are as different as chalk and cheese. Accordingly, my choosing "neutral" in NOT indicative of your being WRONG.
2) If you review the answers given so far to Netlangs'
questions (and s/he chose them as the fittest ones), surely,
you'll acknowledge that meaning has primacy (e.g. see: فضول را بردند جهنم گفت هیزمش تر است & که از تعجب داشت شاخ در می آورد). Accordingly, as you very well mentioned "It may [MAY] still convey both the SENSE and the WORDS" and it may NOT!
3) As to "without this information you can not [...]", owing to this very fact, I remained "neutral" (otherwise I could a adopt a more rigid stance. i.e. "agree" or "disagree") and that's why posted a discussion entry.
4) To me, calling a peer's answer into doubt - on reasonable grounds - means seeking genuine clarification and not confrontation.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Omid

Without further context and background information this expression seems incongruous here.

Note from asker:
Dear Mr. Mostafaei, you are right - I should have made it clearer that he passed out and woke up to find himself in a hospital bed. Then he said these words. Without too much background information a number of possibilities come up, sometimes more than one could be described as the best answer (for example in this case), but we can only choose one best answer. Often the words can be translated, but they still don't make sense to a non-native speaker and this is where your expertise helps to make sense of a phrase. Many thanks for all your comments!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Mohammad Ali Moinfar (X) : Dear Mostafa: When you do not have the background information, any translation, I.M.H.O, is rendering the words and not conveying the SENSE. Regarding the audience as well as the line of answers chosen by the asker, more context is a must. Regards, Omid

Dear Mr Moinfar: not having the background information doesn't necessarily mean that we are wrong! It may still convey both the SENSE and the WORDS. Furthermore, without this information you can not decide whether I am conveying the sense or the words.
