I derived this conclusion from an unlikely source: how the fans of on line role playing games (dungeon and dragons, Ragnarok Online (RO for short), etc) choose, built up then resell their avatars to other players, when they decide to try playing as another character. When doing so, what they offer comprises: the character and his particular role/mission + all the powers and skills he acquired over successful quests+ a paraphernalia of protective and defensive gadgets specific to that character's role and functions.
