Something a driver would wear in 1941 Bessarabia. I've found "caftan" but it sounds a little too exotic.

I would avoid overcoats and greatcoats, which have rather specific forms. One starts to picture dozens of Akaki Akakiyeviches strolling around. I would say "cloaks", except the best pix of "сукман" that I found do have sleeves. http://images.yandex.ru/yandsearch?text=сукман&pos=0&rpt=sim...
