Russian term

сукман

Russian to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Something a driver would wear in 1941 Bessarabia. I've found "caftan" but it sounds a little too exotic.

Возчикам, то есть самим хозяевам подвод, было велено запастись фуражом и едой на три дня. Во всех дворах стояли телеги, переминались с ноги на ногу лошади, бродили люди в сукманах с кнутом и торбой хлеба в руках.

overcoat

Peer comment(s):

agree RitaZ : I think this is best and there's not need to complicate it. The point is that it's a суконный (felt or wool) coat.

agree olgaesq01 : its meaning is "суконный кафтан" so you can use "wool/felt caftan" or "wool/felt coat" :o)

flowing outer garments

I would avoid overcoats and greatcoats, which have rather specific forms. One starts to picture dozens of Akaki Akakiyeviches strolling around. I would say "cloaks", except the best pix of "сукман" that I found do have sleeves. http://images.yandex.ru/yandsearch?text=сукман&pos=0&rpt=sim...

Or, to keep it simpler: flowing coats, long coats.
