@ Hans: You're talking major voltages for an Erdseil; even the EU doesn't demand those cross-sections on railway vehicles - don't forget, a railway vehicle has at least four wheels to earth an electrical charge.

Don't you agree an earthing strap would be adequate in such a case as this?

Erdseil! In Erinnerung an meine Elektrikervergangenheit, und da es sich hier sicher um große Leitungsquerschnitte handelt, würde ich "Erdseil" oder "Erdungsseil" sagen. "Litze" benutzt man bei kleineren querschnitten.

Den Aufbau solcher Räder und die Funktion der Erdungsverbindungen kenne ich. ;-)

Mit "frei herumhängen" meinte ich, dass die Dinger sich unten am Radgestell frei in der Umgebungsluft bewegen. Da ist mit Verschmutzung und Korrosion zu rechnen: Zwischen den einzelnen dünnen Drähten setzt sich doch alles Mögliche fest. Deshalb dachte ich, man muss da eine Schutzhülle drüber haben. Die Dinger sind doch immer aus Kupfer?

They are attached at one end to the wheel centre and at the other to the wheel tyre. This is essential since most railway wheels today are resilient, to reduce noise levels. This means they have a layer of resilient material between wheel and tyre, effectively insulating them electrically. That's why these earthing braids are needed, since earthing on a railway vehicle can only be carried out through the wheels.

I do not favour "Erdungsbrücke", because it is usually solid, whereas the braid is not. If a solid Erdungsbrucke were hit by a stone (ballast, maybe) at high speed, it is far more likely to fracture than a braid. But then that's why the inspections are necessary, to make sure this hasn't happened.

@ Rolf K: Earthing braids (an uncommon enough expression, in all conscience - I only know these woven wire earthing conductors as "earthing straps") are not normally protected by plastic - not on trains, anyway - so no problem with inspecting them, then...

Don't underestimate Conrad, Rolf - in any case, it was only an illustration, and it's absolutely right...

@Herbie Es gibt auch flache Erdungsbänder, die aus Einzeldrähten geflochten sind.

Aber worum es in der Frage geht, das sind doch Kabel, also Litzenleitungen oder Geflechtbänder mit einem dicken, schützenden Kunststoffmantel – man läßt doch im Fahrwerksbereich keine blanken Litzen/Geflechte herumhängen.

Wenn es um flexible Erdungsverbindungen geht: Erdungslitzen. Bei konzentrischem Schirm um (Steuer-)Kabel: Schirmgeflechte / geerdete Schirmgeflechte.

Ich würde "Erdungskabel" oder "Erdungsbrücke" schreiben: Um das Geflecht zu inspizieren, müsste man den Kabelmantel ja zerstören.
