once-through = circuito aberto (a água não recircula)
close-cycle = circuito fechado (com recirculação da água de resfr.)

Em geral, usa-se o circuito aberto para a água salgada, e o circuito fechado para a água doce, de modo que só se perde a água doce que evapora na torre.

agree  Mauro Lando: as respostas citado os substantivos "circuito" e "ciclo" contradizem o que é o "once through" - onde, justamente não há circuito nem ciclo, a água passa uma vez pelo trocador de calor e é descartada. Porisso creio esta ser a melhor resposta
