A sniper must train as he will fight , so during range practice he wears unobstructive , internal ear protection rather than clumsy ear muffs. This way he won't change his stock spotweld if he must shoot without any hearing protection in combat.

Discussion
The rear wooden, metal, or plastic "handle" or "support" of a rifle, a pistol, or an automatic weapon, to which the barrel and mechanism are attached.
American Heritage Dictionary
http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/stock
Stock
noun: the "handle" of a handgun or the "butt end" of a rifle or shotgun or "part of the support" of a machine gun or artillery gun
http://poets.notredame.ac.jp/cgi-bin/wn?cmd=wn&word=stock
rifle shoulder butt
any gun handle
Your question is about “stock”. You didn’t say that you know the term and that you are confused about its relation with ear protective equipment.
Anyway, for info, a sniper places their cheek on their hand (thumb) which firmly holds the stock when firing each shot. Keeping the head, thumb and rifle in firm contact (AKA stock weld) renders better shot accuracy and also enables them (head, thumb and rifle) to recoil as one unit, which serves better, quicker recovery between fired rounds.
“Clumsy ear muffs”, probably as part of a mask, don’t enjoy the same specifications/advantages of the product at hand. Loose contact between the head (including a mask with ear protection) and the stock results in cracking those masks and breaking their seal, which renders them ineffective in real combat.
