Spanish term
una grilla
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
This is in a text about an artist's work (Chilean Spanish)
Me interesa el arts, su investigacion y practica porque me hace sentir despierto y atento a todo lo que pasa.... Claramente es una forma de vida, una grilla desde donde mirar el desarrollo humano;
The only meanings I can find of 'grilla' are cricket, box, grid, politician, scheming, an unattractive woman, programme.
Has anyone seen this use before? TIA

keeping close to the Spanish. I think this spelling "grille" is not associated with prison at all
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/grille
I agree with Wendy about peephole/spyhole/lattice
as it does seem to be a hidden viewer observing the world.
perhaps "BLIND" (n) "JALOUSIE" might work
or getting a bit further away from the "grilla" and just using "vantage point" or "window" "opening, chink, aperture, crack,..."
Something else that came to mind was the Shakespearian
"hold a mirror up to nature"
in other words, reflections of humanity being depicted in art

glad to have helped. Yes, sometimes the simplest option is the best...

I used 'window' in the end. Thanks for your helpful discussion J

peep-hole/spy-hole
I imagine it means a grating or lattice but can't come up with a really appropriate word.
Note from asker:
I know, me neither, the idea of a grill is not a good one as it just makes me think of jail rather than something positive. |

a lattice
I wonder whether this might work. The image "grilla" brings to my mind here is a "celosía", which enable you to look at things through them without being observed watching. They used to be used a great deal for this purpose; people who wanted to watch plays in the old Spanish playhouses without themselves being observed by the plebeian part of the audience used to have boxes with"celosías", which were wooden lattices. I feel that Wendy's idea of a peep hole or spy hole is along the right lines. "Lattice" might get closer to the original image.
I think "grilla" refers to a grill like a car radiator grill; a series of metal bars between which you can look.

I do apologise to Wendy: looking at her answer more carefully I see she mentioned this word. But I think it's an option.

Thanks, Bill. Yes, it does. I'm suddenly reminded of a conference I once went to on the erotic in Golden Age Spanish literature. I gave a paper on voyeurism: spying on people having sex.

I think it may work in this context.
