Spanish term

construido al vacío

Spanish to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Hi all,

This is taken from a description of the Grand Soleil 54' sailing boat:

En los aspectos náuticos de su contrucción, destaca el casco, ***construido al vacío*** con el objetivo de minimizar pesos y obtener una mayor rigidez, lo que aporta confort, estabilidad y, sobre todo, seguridad en la navegación.

I've found the following pertinent information online, but I'm still unable to convey 'construido al vacío' using a concise term: The hull and deck are constructed from a PVC sandwich with polyester and vinylester resin, using unidirectional and biaxial glass fibres. Solid laminate around the keel, rudder and chainplates guarantees maximum stiffness and rigidity.

All help is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Jack

vacuum (bagging) infusion process

The hull is laminated using the vacuum infusion process, ensuring the optimum ratio of fibre to resin. In contrast, the internal structure is made of a transverse structure in carbon fibre, which interacts with the unidirectional layers of fibre applied lengthwise along the hull. This all means that the hull is lighter and incredibly stiff. She has a T-shaped keel which enables a high ballast ratio and reduced wetted surface.

The construction techniques applied have taken full advantage of the latest technological innovations: hull and deck are built in sandwich construction, the hull is laminated through the process of vacuum-bag infusion, the internal grid pan is made of a composite of carbon and glass fibre, this saves 600kilos in relation to agalvanised steel gridpan, yet is stiffer and stronger.

Hull and deck are laminated through the vacuum bagging infusion process that optimises the fiber-to-resin ratio and removes trapped air between layers.

Vacuum-Bagging
This is a process of completely enclosing and sealing a panel being built and bonded within a plastic bag and then extracting most of the air, so that exterior atmospheric pressure can be put to work to squeeze the surfaces more tightly together for better bonding. Many modern constructions system will benefit from being cured while under this naturally available compressive force. If we can squeeze out excess resin and improve the fiber/resin ratio, we'll get a lighter, stronger part.

As regards the translation, I would write something like: 'it is worth noting the hull, which has been laminated using the vacuum bagging infusion process in order to...'

The infusion lamination and the T-shaped bulb keel
make the boat lighter but also more rigid and resistant
to torsion.

All hulls are cored with Airex foams,
80kg/m3
or 100kg/m3
depending on the model. Vacuum
bagging consolidates the sandwiches.

neutral bigedsenior : vacuum-bag or bagging process is ok, but you are inferring that it includes infusion, as well. It may well be but it is not in the text. There are 2 vacuum procedures, one is to squeeze out the resin, the other is to "Suck in" fresh resin -infusion.

Yes, you're quite right but I've just posted two references from grandsoleil.net: one ref. refers to infusion lamination and the other to vacuum bagging. Which process do you think is correct?
