The translation of 'competencias básicas' has me going round in circles and I'd like to have your views on this. I've found refs for all of the below:

Is it:

1. Core competencies
2. Core competences
3. Basic competencies
4. Basic competences (this is what I am opting for at the moment)

All schoolchildren (primary and secondary) need to develop these 'competencias básicas' which consist of:

Conocimiento e interacción con el mundo físico
Competencia cultural y artística
Tratamiento de la información y competencia digital
Competencia en comunicación lingüística
Competencia matemática
Competencia para aprender a aprender
Autonomía e iniciativa personal

(I've been using 'competence' for all these where appropriate, i.e. Cultural and Artistic Competence, Mathematical Competence, Competence in Learning to Learn, etc.)

All opinions are valid, but obviously given the definition of the competences (normally 7 or 8 per initiative), these are competences to be integrated into the Spanish curriculum in line with EU guidelines and these are standard EU terms, be they boring or not...

Development of Basic Skills

Explanation:
I prefer skills in the context of schoolchildren, especially "linguistic communication skills", and perhaps "competency" for their teachers.

Also, "proficiency" and "literacy" could work in some instances, e.g. "digital literacy" for "competencia digital".
Digital literacy is the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies.

Although links are made across subject areas whenever appropriate some subjects are taught separately, for example P.E, and time is allocated for the teaching and development of basic skills in English and Maths
