In a 'notifica' from the Customs Agency, confirming the results of tests carried out on a consignment of foodstuffs:
Instinctively I translated this as 'in his capacity' but going back over it I wonder if it doesn't mean "or in his place" (nella sua vece). I'm struggling to find confirmation either way so would appreciate a hand.
Io sottoscritto XXX, funzionario dell'Uffico delle Dogane, ho notificato oggi in doppio originale, uno dei quali e stato consegnato nelle sue mani:
- al Sig. YYY, Tessera N. ____, nella sua veci di spedizioniere o coadiutore dello spedizioniere doganale Sig. ______, Tessera N. ______
- al Sig _________, CI/Patente N. _____________, nella sua veci di legale rappresentante pro-tempore ai sensi di art 1 DM 29.12.92
e l'atro e' stato allegato agli atti d'Ufficio.

It should be "nelle sue veci di", however I would translate in this way.

Role would be ok, but in written documents "capacity" is preferable.
