Caracter restringido, caracter no restringido

Non-PRO Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hello,

Am translating what I'd describe as a degree outline and have come across the aforementioned phrases in the following context:
El plan consta de 48 asignaturas de las cuales 25 son obligatorias y 23 son optativas (11 de caracter no restringido y 12 de caracter restringido).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Discussion

I would say restricted and not restricted.
I suppose it refers to electives that have prerequisites?

restricted and free choice/unrestricted

Restricted electives and unrestricted electives.

tudents in the BBA program have two unrestricted electives that are usually taken during students' junior and senior years. The unrestricted elective, like the non-business elective, is a 3-credit course numbered 100 to 199. All courses that would be considered upper-level non-business electives can also be used as unrestricted electives. Any course that is not given credit in the BBA program, such as EDUC 180: Computer Literacy, MATH 3, 9, 10, or 20 (unless 21 is completed), EXSA courses, or the first semester of a language the student took in high school, may not be used as an unrestricted elective.

Free-Choice Electives
What are Electives?

The majority of Degree and Diploma students will have to incorporate into their programmes of study an element of free-choice learning described as an elective. The primary purpose of the Free-Choice Elective is to enable students to develop skills such as a language or acquire knowledge outside their main areas of study, and to provide additional flexibility to students who wish to change their study programme after entry to the University. You can make your choice from a selection of Free-Choice Elective modules that are delivered across many subject areas and details of these can be found in the Free-Choice Electives Catalogue. For some courses the choice of Elective is restricted and you will be informed of this at your Course Briefing or Induction Event.

Restricted electives are a group of elective courses that you must choose from. So, if you need 9 credits of restrictive electives, you must choose 9 credits from the restricted elective list provided for your particular major/minor.

Restricted Elective

A restricted elective is a course which must be chosen from a stated group of courses to satisfy the program requirements.

http://askgryph.registrar.uoguelph.ca/?interfaceID=1&request...

An elective course is one chosen by a student from a number of optional subjects or courses in a curriculum, as opposed to a required course which the student must take. While required courses (sometimes called "core courses" or "general education courses") are deemed essential for an academic degree, elective courses tend to be more specialized. Elective courses usually have fewer students than the required courses.

Certain modules will be obligatory for your degree course. These are referred to as the core modules. Sometimes you have a choice between a restricted set of modules and sometimes you can chose modules from anywhere in the University. These are referred to as unrestricted modules although your choice will be limited by the level and timetable. Just which core, restricted or unrestricted modules you can take depends on the Regulations for your degree.
