Discussion

Serge Wolff (asker) Jul 16, 2014:
Installation of airfin banks Thank you all very much for contributing to my question. I have chosen for the term 'Installation of airfin banks'.
Serge Wolff (asker) Jul 16, 2014:
@Michael I see what you mean and I agree that each apparently different term should have its own KudoZ question. Fortunately, the field name (Term or phrase) leaves some freedom for the asker. I considered my question as a unit.

I read your comment at my other KudoZ question. Thanks for your opinion. It's good to know what peers think. It's for us, so we should make a joint set of rules for our own good.
writeaway Jul 16, 2014:
@Freek it's one of the main reasons the imaginary place of worship is now so devoid of worshipers.
Michael Beijer Jul 16, 2014:
@Sindy: I have since mended my ways, partly thanks to the excellent instruction provided by both yourself and Ms writeaway over the last few years. I would also like to thank mr freek fluweel, a recent addition to your team of Excellent Language People. Keep up the good work guys and girls! Vooral zo doorgaan.

Well, what is he supposed to do then? After all he is the RefRev of his imaginary congregation...

@ Michael That's a bit 'holier than thou,', isn't it? I seem to remember a 23-word question you asked just before Christmas last year... Ah, yes, you deleted it...
Michael Beijer Jul 16, 2014:
my reasoning Hi Serge,

The reason I mentioned this is that it is better to have real terms in the glossary, rather than entire snippets of people’s translations. I am not at all against asking entire phrases, but only if they form a real unit.

In this case, e.g., I assume your problem is with the term ‘airvinbanken’, rather than with the verb ‘plaatsen’. If you had only entered ‘airvinbanken’ (better even would have been ‘airvinbank’), then this would be what eventually ends up in the KudoZ glossary, with its English translation. There are of course cases where several words would be more justified, such as instances where the other words form an integral part of a term or concept, and therefore cannot really be left out when asking for help. Can’t think of one at the minute, but I hope you see what I mean.
Serge Wolff (asker) Jul 16, 2014:
'Term or phrase' The field name for asking a KudoZ question is 'Term or phrase'.
Michael Beijer Jul 15, 2014:
@writeaway: and yet I frown upon it sternly
writeaway Jul 15, 2014:
Plaatsen van airvinbanken is completely within the rules as question.
Michael Beijer Jul 15, 2014:
@Serge: It is customary to use KudoZ questions for individual terms, rather than for entire phrases. For example, in this case you might want to ask for help with the term ‘airvinbank’.

neutral Michael Beijer : are you sure ‘airfin bank’ is actually English? / I can only find Dutch-authored sites using the term ‘airfin banks’, hence my question.
