In a Mutual assistance request from Australian to Dutch authorities, I came across the phrase ´brief of evidence´.
´The [Australian] police will provide a brief of evidence to the NSW office of the Director of Public Prosecutions [OPDD] to make an assessment of whether to prosecute [the Suspect]. The [Australian] police seeks statements from [2] Dutch police officer[s]. The [Australian] police wishes to include the police statements in the brief of evidence to the OPDD.´
I am not sure if there is a one-on-one equivalent in Dutch for ´brief of evidence´. Im considering ´politierapport´ as a translation. I would like to hear your suggestions.

Dit gaat naar de officier van justitie. Hij vertegenwoordigt het OM. De officier van justitie beoordeelt of alle feiten duidelijk zijn en hoe sterk het bewijs is. Hij neemt uiteindelijk de beslissing of de verdachte voor de rechter komt.

Ik heb jouw vraag voorgelegd aan Van den End, omdat deze term niet is opgenomen in JurLex en ik zelf ook nieuwsgierig ben naar de beste vertaling/oplossing.

What is a brief of evidence?
If you plead not guilty to an offence, the magistrate may in some cases order the police to serve (give) a brief of evidence on you.
A ‘brief of evidence’ is a group of documents, including statements and photographs that the police may use as evidence at the hearing. In most cases, it will contain:
a ‘contents list’ of the documents in the brief of evidence
statements from the police officers involved in the case
statements from the victim (if there is one) and witnesses
copies of any exhibits, for example, photos or CDs containing CCTV footage
the results of any forensic tests, for example, blood tests
a transcript or recording of the interview between you and the police (if you did one)
a Local Court Listing Advice, which you will need to fill out and give to the magistrate when you next go to court.
Reading and understanding a brief of evidence can be complicated. If you don’t understand it, you should get legal advice.
It is possible to change your plea after reading the brief of evidence. For more information, see Changing your plea.
Het lijkt erop dat de combinatie alleen in Australië wordt gebruikt. 'brief of evidence' is inderdaad niet opgenomen.
Ik adviseer u ‘brief of evidence’ gecursiveerd in de vertaling te zetten, gevolgd door 'het verzamelde bewijsmateriaal'.

Ik twijfel over de juistheid van 'proces-verbaal' als vertaling, met name wat betreft het ondersteunende bewijsmateriaal dat in een 'brief of evidence' is opgenomen (uitslagen forensisch onderzoek, camerabeelden etc.).

Het strafdossier - dat door de officier van Justitie wordt samengesteld - bestaat vaak uit meerdere processen-verbaal. Mede daarom twijfel ik of de term 'brief of evidence' eenvoudigweg vertaald kan worden met 'proces-verbaal'. Er kan immers sprake zijn van meerdere door de politie aangeleverde processen-verbaal die samen de 'brief of evidence' vormen. De term 'het verzamelde bewijsmateriaal' is wat mij betreft daarom neutraler en dus veiliger.

| Dank voor je reactie. Dat ben ik helemaal met je eens, dat het tricky is. In mijn vertaling heb ik jouw suggestie gebruikt. De brief of evidence lijkt inderdaad uitgebreider te zijn dan ons proces-verbaal, maar afgezien daarvan zie ik qua inhoud en functie geen verschil. Voor beide opties is iets te zeggen.
