Portuguese term

dotados

Portuguese to English Other Government / Politics
E, nesse sentido, não se requer para este entendimento um visão racional dos agentes que executam as escolhas, mas um complexo conjunto de fatores que são dotados de racionalidade, percepção e interesses, conjecturais e particulares.

I'm looking for the most suitable translation for this verb in this context. Thanks!

Tim Friese Jul 29, 2014:
@R-i-c-h-a-r-d I was against your answer because I have a sense that 'bestowed' is used in the following ways: 1) for positive connotations 2) for things that can be given 3) the thing given should be positive like an award, an honor, or a right 4) sometimes the giver is God.

A quick look at collocations on the Corpus of Contemporary American English confirms my intuition. The most common words appearing in the vicinity of 'bestowed' are words like honor, gift, award, etc. It does not seem to be used in written or spoken English to mean something like 'includes'.

IMO, não são os fatores que são dotados de...
É um conjunto de fatores, entre os quais...
O autor parece ter se equivocado na escolha do verbo.

"são dotados de"... ...could also be written "possuem". Only more verbose.

Thanks Gilmar, I used this translation once but I was criticised. My concern is that this phrase is usually used in terms of sexual attributes haha
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tim Friese : or it is used with thinks like rights - not the best option here

Thanks for your input. I'll stick to the "well-endowed guy" connotation pointed out by Paul :)

Another possibility, much in the vein of Gilmar's, but suitably formal for a governmental/political scenario. All The Best :)

Why doesn't that make sense, Tim? "The set of factors" are bestowed with (given) the qualities of rationality, perception... etc. All The Best :)

neutral R. Alex Jenkins : Hi, you really shouldn't post answers like this. Just a friendly pointer. // Hello. I didn't read your answer fully - I thought it was simply a pointer to a discussion entry, which isn't normally permitted as it clutters the kudoz db. All The Best.
