Change log

Aug 21, 2014 17:12: Natasha Ziada (X) changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): philgoddard, Michael Beijer, Natasha Ziada (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Laurens Sipahelut Aug 22, 2014:
'equatorial tracks/paths' 'Evenaarspaden' have got to allude to the fact that the tracks/paths are geographically located near or on the equator.
Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 21, 2014:
If you wanted to use "equatorial" you might construct something like:

... on the dusty/dirty paths in this equatorial area
Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 21, 2014:
as I indicated: http://tinyurl.com/ntv9cx2
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
@Barend: That's why I added ‘dusty’ to it:

dusty equatorial tracks sounds pretty good to me
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
@ michael
and how! it's lieve joris_ dans van de luipaard!
Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 21, 2014:
"equatorial tracks" doesn't sound good to me.

Apart from this, both equatorial tracks and paths are mixed up with a much more usual meaning of them. See internet.

For example:

Measure the cirrus ice-particle-size spectra and characterize the ice crystal habits along the equatorial tracks.
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
interesting stuff! quite different than the IT/logistics-related white paper I'm working on at the moment
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
@burak: Yeah, I think ‘dusty equatorial tracks’ is probably the best one so far.
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
'dusty' equatorial tracks...
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
@Barend: ‘tropical’ sounds very green to me. not very dusty
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
some synonyms: path, pathway, footpath, lane, trail, route, way, course, trail, walkway, track, trackway, bridleway, bridle path, portage trail, lane, alley, alleyway, passage, passageway; sidewalk, pedway, bikeway, avenue, boulevard, drive, expressway, freeway, highway, road, roadway, route, street, superhighway, thoroughfare, thruway, turnpike, way …
Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 21, 2014:
Perhaps change change 'equatorial' in 'tropical'

tropical paths

http://tinyurl.com/lfu687j

I hope that it is appreciated as such by people, and if not, then just a rollicking good time, vicariously bouncing along with me on dusty dirty, tropical paths in the marvelous, gorgeous natural and human landscapes of Southeast Asia.
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
@Verginia: I don't think the emphasis is on the geographical route, but on the actual track/road/path they are cycling on with their wares...
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
hmm not sure about paths. sounds a bit too small/narrow/jungle-like to me.
maybe tracks? as in ‘dirt tracks’
tracks are often dusty, or at least the word ‘track’ sounds dustier to me than ‘path’ ;)

‘equatorial tracks’ or
‘equatorial dirt tracks’ or
‘dusty equatorial tracks’ ???

track: ‘A rough path or minor road, typically one beaten by use rather than constructed’ (Oxforddictionaries.com)

‘I did not immediately suspect trouble, because the roads in the Belgian Congo were dirt tracks that the equatorial rains turned into quagmires.’ (http://www.dlwaldron.com/Luluabourg.html )
Barend van Zadelhoff Aug 21, 2014:
possibly: equatorial paths

paths in an equatorial area

dusty equatorial paths
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
it's non-fiction, but i wouldn't go as far as equatorial roads, here's more small villages, unimproved/dirt roads etc.
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
@burak: who wrote this?
what is it?
etc.

any more context?
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
‘equatorial roads’ ‘In the Belgian Congo, which admittedly is the most progressive part of Africa today, the central spine of the Cape to Cairo route is still broken by the existing breach from the Congo to the Nile, but no less than five railway routes are being surveyed for early construction, while a magnificent system of equatorial roads is materializing to synchronize with the growing motor traffic, connecting thereby the numerous profitable mines and tropical plantations with the river steamers and existing main railroads in this prosperous Belgian colony.’

– The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey, Or, Africa for the ..., Volume 1, by Marcus Garvey

Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
hmm... interesting ‘The Democratic Republic of the Congo lies on the Equator, with one-third of the country to the north and two-thirds to the south. The climate is hot and humid in the river basin and cool and dry in the southern highlands, with a cold, alpine climate in the Ruwenzori Range.
South of the Equator, the rainy season lasts from October to May and north of the Equator, from April to November. Along the Equator, rainfall is fairly regular throughout the year. During the wet season, thunderstorms often are violent but seldom last more than a few hours. The average rainfall for the entire country is about 1,070 mm (42 in).’ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_the_Democratic_Re... )
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
*local* will have to do i guess, cheers :)
philgoddard Aug 21, 2014:
Evenaars is the Dutch name for the province of Equateur, presumably from when it was a Belgian colony.
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
sth like ... on dusty local roads from town to town (?)
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
aha! OK, so either it relates to this ‘Evenaars Provincie’ area, or to what I mentioned above, or to both, as it is a literary text (I assume)

not a long windy fietspad, as I had imagined, but a long straight road maybe?
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
Congo...
burak sengir (asker) Aug 21, 2014:
neither have i; his town is in Congo's Evenaars Provincie but still this sounds strange.
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
I suppose the author means those long, long, long, straight fietspaden or roads between towns in the Netherlands. I remember those. I'd try and come up with sth clever. sth like:

endless cycle paths / roads ?
Michael Beijer Aug 21, 2014:
are you sure it doesn't mean sth specific? I've never heard the word before, but I wouldn't recommend simply translating it as ‘equator paths’. That sounds strange.
freekfluweel Aug 21, 2014:
equator paths letterlijk vertalen, geen Ghits
