: Yes, "trägt" is metaphorical, and "support" is quite established as an architectural term, in my experience.

And no, Andrew: At least in my case, you don't have to suggest a literal translation. I've actually said on more than one occasion that I'd prefer a term that describes the mental image/the idea in English over one that is merely being used because someone stumbled over it on LEO or whatever...
