turret gunner/roof turret
I'll go with this. Wiki will give you a start ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humvee.
But again, the actual Swe context would help with certainty. This suggestion applies only to a position mounted in the vehicle

: There is no "turret" in the source term! - Addendum: Leif Ohman's reference does not contain any indication whatsoever that a turret was in use on the vehicle.

Again you jump to conclusions without reading my caveat or getting context. The Swe word is less than common, but likely does not refer to a soldier lying unprotected on the roof of a convoy vehicle, does it? AGAIN, your disagree has no linguistic merit.

gunner
Just gunner, (or maybe humvee gunner depending on vehicle) as the position is implied.

: I think it better to avoid 'turret', 'roof' etc so as to keep the title vehicle independent, for it could be a simple as a rifleman standing in a sunroof opening..

Discussion
"These long trips can be trying for soldiers, and it can be challenging to stay alert and prepared. This is especially true for the vehicle gunners who stand in the turret ...."
further down the page is a guy standing in a turret, er, perhaps its a modified sunroof... ;-)
@Sven maybe this person is standing up through a sun-roof? http://books.google.se/books?id=r2fa_J9VAqQC&pg=PA258&lpg=PA...
