Surely?
I can't imagine what the background to this source text is, but the implication seems to be clear: Ann is used to living in a cupboard — or doesn't think she deserves any better.

From the way the writer has spelt it, one might deduce that the image they are seeking to give us of Ann is that she is from a lower stratum of society who either pronounces with some kind of common / regional accent, or is not terribly literate and simply doesn't know how it should be pronounced properly.

: I don't think she aspires to live in a cupboard, it's just that cupboards are an essential feature of the accommodation she wants.

: Far from thinking she would have to live in one, built-in cupboards would have been her idea of luxury.

Thanks, B! Well, I was only joking; still, the architect was asking about 'accommodation', to which 'cupboards' appears a curious reply.
