German term
AUFTNR.
German to English
Art/Literary
Music
I am translating a number of articles about a musician. One of the documents looks like a ticket or train schedule, detailing the cities where the musician will appear and when. The abbreviation AUFTNR. appears at the top of the document, followed by a number and the "Erscheinungsdatum." What could AUFTNR. be in this context?

contract number
As I posted in the discussion box, this is most likely a contract followed by the concert/performance/gig date (Erscheinungsdatum). Musicians do not take 'orders' (;-)), we make contracts.

: "Erscheinungsdatum" does not fit with "concert/performance/gig". It's clearly related to publishing. That doesn't make your suggestion "contract number" less likely, though.

True, Erik, that is most decidedly a possibility!

Thanks. Unfortunately, the asker gave misleading description (a ticket or train schedule, detailing the cities where the musician will appear and when). It turns out to have been a search number for the publication in which the clipping appeared.

: Seems very unlikely. "Auftritt" is rather a layman term seldom used by professional musicians./Aha.

: When a professional musician (or any musician) make an appearance, it is an "Auftritt." https://www.google.de/?gws_rd=ssl#q=musicalischer auftritt

Discussion
I just entered a neutral (!) comment to your answer, I didn't say it was plain wrong, just quite unlikely (although it did turn out to be wrong after all, which I anticipated). I'm sorry if you're annoyed by my efforts to substantiate my opinion when it is challenged - a practice that you don't seem to appreciate very much. I gave my very own personal view of the matter as someone with indeed long-time, first-hand, native language and up-to-date experience as a professional musician (by which in this case I don't mean teaching in music schools, or leading amateur choirs etc.)
Maybe you misunderstood my remark "layman term", by which I certainly did not want to imply that you were a layman. For all I know, you may be far more experienced in music than I am. It's just that in my experience, "Auftritt" is a term that professional musicians rarely use, or only under very special circumstances, while it is far more popular amongst amateurs (which in turn makes your answer unlikely).
If you think this isn't true, we can safely agree to disagree. No ad-hominems or "who's a real pro" arm-wrestling necessary.
