Hallo allemaal! Graag jullie hulp bij het vertalen van "a highly directive culture", kom er zelf niet helemaal uit!

Two examples of hard management techniques that Japanese companies are instrumental in promoting are “Just-In-Time” and “Total-Quality” systems. The aim of JIT is to match, as nearly as possible, output with market demand in a continuous process beginning at the stage of long-range planning and ending when the product reaches the end user. The aim of Total Quality is to eliminate error and waste at all stages of the process. This is not just on the shop floor but at every stage in the process. As well as technical expertise, these systems demand above all a commitment of every person in the organisation to carrying them out. If they are perceived as yet another tool for the management to control the workers then they fail. They will not work in a highly directive culture or one in which relations between different levels in the organisations are characterised by confrontation. Planning, in every sense, including rigorous budgeting, is a vital part of the management process.

Dank je, Kitty. Ik vind ook maar 16 Google-hits voor 'directieve cultuur' (inclusief Vlaamse) (en 5 voor sturende cultuur) en ik vind het niet mooi.

een sturende cultuur
Directive is sturend in deze context. Het tegenovergestelde is een ondersteunende cultuur. In een sturende cultuur wordt precies gespecificeerd wat er verwacht wordt en hoe het gedaan moet worden. In een ondersteunende cultuur hebben werknemers veel meer initiatief om hun eigen taken uit te werken en richten managers zich op het ondersteunen ipv controleren van hun werknemers.

Ik ken het verschil tussen 'sturend' of 'directief' en '(non)-directief' oorspronkelijk alleen vanuit therapeutisch perspectief (jaren 50 en 60). Non-directieve therapie is de Rogeriaanse therapie. Er zijn andere vormen van non-directieve therapie en ook directieve therapie. 'Directieve therapieën' worden typisch omschreven als sturend. In organisatiepsychologie werd ook meer sturend gebruikt dan directief. Ik geloof dat sturend mijn voorkeur heeft. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat 'directief' een letterlijke vertaling is, wat ook kan verklaren waarom sturend als een meer inhoudelijke vertaling in Vlaanderen de voorkeur heeft.

PS: Kijk ook nog eens in de context van Japanse bedrijfsculturen. Die worden ook typisch en van oudsher als sturend omschreven, niet als 'directief'.

Nog een gedachte: met de keuze voor sturend kun je het koppelen aan 'sturend vermogen'. Met directief wordt dat niks. Het begrip sturen is ook gekoppeld aan de uitgebreide systeemtheorieën die voor bedrijfstheorieën en bedrijfsanalyse e.d. in omloop zijn.

Nog een opmerking: In mijn huidige vertaling (een training voor een groot NL bedrijf met 47.000 werknemers) wordt uitgebreid ingegaan op de verschillende behoeften van werknemers op verschillende ontwikkelingsniveaus. Hier komt ook het onderscheid tussen 'behoefte aan ondersteuning' en 'behoefte aan sturing' terug.
Wat moet je met 'need for direction' als je het grondwoord direction/directive vertaalt als 'directief'? Behoefte aan directie? Liever niet dus.

Ik vraag me af of 'sturend' de Vlaamse voorkeur is. Ik zit momenteel midden in een project waarin het als 'sturend' is vertaald.//Dat was oorspronkelijk voor Coca Cola in Be inderdaad.
